Vegetarian question, what are mascara and lipstick made of?

i am a (lacto-ovo, eats eggs and dairy)vegetarian and i do not use anything tested on animals, and i was wondering if mascara or lipstick has any product that a animal was killed for. thanks!!!Vegetarian question, what are mascara and lipstick made of?
I've always used Urban Decay because I'm genuinely satisfied that they produce vegan make-up. Their stuff is fab!

There's also a brand called Sevi. They're vegan too.

Very important too to think about where you get your brushes from. I use Makeup-Junky at

FYI: A previous post mentioned the use of 'lanolin' in some make-up. Lanolin comes from sheeps wool. The animal doesn't have to be harmed or killed to obtain this. Some people are okay with that, some not.

uhhh it depends what company you buy the makeup from. most lipsticks contain lanolin (deprived from a sheep) and mascaras contain beeswax. if you want a product that doesnt contain any ingridents from an animal or is tested on an animal, opt for vegan cosmetics.
Slugs and snails and puppy-dogs tails...

Only kidding. Some organisations that approve brands not tested on animals also approve them to have no animal ingredients. The BUAV's logo means both.
http://www.caringconsumer.com you can look up your fav. make up company and see if they test on animals. I know M.A.C and Maybelline tests on animals. Revlon stopped testing a while back.
Bare Escentuals and Aveda don't test - they're on the Caring Consumer ';don't test'; list and they're more natural products. So is MAC and lots of other common brands.
Some red make-up (mainly lipsticks) still use cochineal - derived from beetles of the same name, and it's a gross thought putting beetle blood all over your lips :S
I heard lipstick was made of fish scales too..

%26amp; shark blood. [idk.]
lipstick has fish scales in it
